Formula 1: Red Bull dream in China, Hülkenberg shows strong (2024)

Formula 1 is visiting China. There hasn't been a race here since 2019 and the drivers hardly know the route. You can read why this can become a problem here in the live ticker.

Q3:

That seals it: Red Bull starts from the front row, Verstappen P1 and Perez 2. Fernando Alonso is incredibly strong again in P3. However, it wasn't a good qualifying for the two Ferraris: this time it was only enough for P6 and P7. Even the two McLarens were faster.

Q3:

Two minutes left to drive. The drivers are now aiming for pole position in Shanghai. Clear favorite: Max Verstappen, of course.

Q3:

Poorly calculated by Bottas and Sauber: The Finn is only driving out now, had not set a time before and now has to deal with all the traffic from the other cars.

Q3:

Fernando Alonso impresses with his Aston Martin. The Spaniard is currently in P2, directly behind Verstappen - not even Perez in the other Red Bull can get there.

Q3:

All drivers, except Bottas, are on track for their warm-up laps. It's Verstappen's turn now, with his fast lap and because the track is getting warmer and better, it can only be good.

Chinese Grand Prix: Who was eliminated after Q2?

  • Lance Stroll

  • Daniel Ricciardo

  • Esteban Ocon

  • Alex Albon

  • Pierre Gasly

Q2:

Everything went well again for Sainz. He is further ahead and was even able to finish in P3 in Q2. Also good news for Nico Hülkenberg, the German is in P9 and also one lap further!

Q2:

Two minutes left to drive. Sainz hasn't been able to set a time yet and is now out. All the other drivers are also on the track and want to improve again.

Q2:

George Russell is the first on the track, the Brit hasn't set a time yet and wants to do so as quickly as possible. Next to him, only Verstappen is out there so far. All other drivers are still in the pits.

Formula 1 in Shanghai: Red flag – Carlos Sainz drives onto the gravel and spins

Q2:

In three minutes we'll be back here in Shanghai. Carlos Sainz will probably be able to drive again, hopefully this time without spinning in the gravel.

Q2:

Sainz has now arrived in the pit lane and the team now has to inspect the car, attach a new front wing and hope that the underbody is not damaged.

Q2:

RED FLAG! Carlos Sainz came out too far and hit it! Qualifying seems to be over for the Spaniard here unless they can repair the car while the track is closed.

Q2:

Hülkenberg, with a very good time so far, but no decision has been made yet about a penalty. Both Stroll and Ricciardo can't make the German's time!

Q2:

There is also a ray of hope for Alpine: both drivers finally made it to Q2! This has never been the case this year. All drivers are slowly getting on the track for the next lap.

Formula 1 in China: Who is out after Q1?

  • Zhou Guanyu

  • Kevin Magnussen

  • Lewis Hamilton

  • Yuki Tsunoda

  • Logan Sargeant

Q1:

How bitter! Lewis Hamilton is out, the Brit could hardly improve his time and simply falls out of Q1 in 18th place. After such a sprint race, nobody expected that! Even for Perez it was really close at the end to P15. What a first round!

Q1:

There will most likely be a grid penalty for Nico Hülkenberg. He overtook on the right in the pit lane and also endangered a cameraman!

Q1:

Both Lando Norris and Perez now only have one opportunity for a fast lap. The two of them are alone on the track and can't go out again with fresh tires.

Qualifying in China: Good times from Piastri and Alonso

Q1:

Sergio Perez hasn't set any time yet, the Mexican seems to be taking his time today.

Q1:

Oscar Piastri with the fastest time, in sectors 1 and 2 he was the fastest on the track. The drivers will be on the track until the last minute trying to set the best time.

Q1:

Ten minutes left for the first part of the qualification. So far, Fernando Alonso is the fastest on the track, even world champion Verstappen can't keep up.

Q1:

There was probably an incident in the pit lane at Hülkenberg, which the race management will first investigate. Probably another jostling situation because every driver wanted to get out quickly.

Q1:

Many drivers are already out on the track. Kevin Magnussen put in a good first time. The teams have a very special look at the tires this weekend, because the sprint means they have one less set of tires available.

Formula 1 in Shanghai: Lewis Hamilton shows Mercedes strongly in the sprint

Shanghai – For the first time in years, Formula 1 is racing in Shanghai again: Even though Verstappen emerged as the winner of the sprint, it was Lewis Hamilton's performance that impressed. The Brit was able to beat Lando Norris right at the start, led the field for a few laps and crossed the finish line in second place. In doing so, he showed that Mercedes are not completely out of the window yet. Maybe he can repeat that in qualifying.

The two Ferraris fought a battle in the sprint race that left the fans breathless. Carlos Sainz quickly pushed his colleague Charles Leclerc off the track before he was the faster of the two with two laps to go. For Fernando Alonso, a tough battle with Sainz ended in the pit lane and the Aston Martin was unable to finish the race.

Chinese Grand Prix: Why can the sprint weekend be a disadvantage here?

It is the first sprint race of the 2024 season, but some drivers don't like the fact that Shanghai was chosen. There have been no races here since 2019, so some drivers have never driven the route. Because of the sprint there was only one free practice session on Friday. Teams and drivers can therefore hardly test the cars: new tires, new cars - it's like a new track.

If accidents occur during a sprint race, this car data is also unusable. World champion Verstappen in particular criticized Formula 1 for this: “I think it's not good, because if you haven't visited a track for a while, you never know what you're going to experience there, so it would have been better to have a normal racing weekend there "He's speaking from the driver's perspective; the sprint is much more exciting for the spectators, he admits. Whether the sprint will be a disadvantage here will only become clear during the race on Sunday (April 20th).
